Specialised areas of practice:
Matthew is a civil litigator advising clients on a range of complex commercial and civil disputes, with particular expertise in trust and estate litigation.
He has extensive experience litigating complex and high value trust and estate disputes in New Zealand and internationally. Matthew recently spent a number of years in Bermuda litigating prominent, multi-jurisdiction trust disputes, including the Wong and X Trusts series of cases. He is currently completing his studies for full membership with the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), and in 2025, he was awarded a STEP Excellence Award for receiving the top mark globally for his essay on ‘Sham and Illusory Trusts’.
In New Zealand, Matthew has represented trustees, executors and beneficiaries on a range of matters, including trustee removal applications, blessing and directions applications and disclosure disputes.
Matthew also has broad commercial litigation experience, advising companies, directors, shareholders, franchisors and franchisees through the various challenges they face in business, including company issues, shareholder disputes, franchising disputes and contractual issues. He also acts for insolvency professionals and creditors on insolvency matters.
He is an experienced advocate, having appeared in the New Zealand Court of Appeal, High Court and District Court, as well as the New Zealand Sports Tribunal and other disciplinary tribunals. He has also appeared in the Court of Appeal for Bermuda and the Supreme Court of Bermuda.
