Thomas is an experienced litigator and arbitration counsel. The focus of his practice is commercial and public law disputes.

Thomas has appeared as sole or junior counsel in all the senior courts of New Zealand (including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court). His commercial litigation experience includes contractual disputes, director and shareholder disputes, energy disputes, worldwide freezing injunctions (including urgent interim relief) and banking disputes. His public law litigation experience includes judicial review, human rights and matters under the Official Information Act 1982 and Privacy Act 2020. Thomas also has wide experience in defending complex regulatory matters for large commercial entities, including investigations and proceedings brought by the Commerce Commission. He also has experience and interest in medico-legal and sports law issues.

In addition to his experience before the courts, Thomas has represented clients around the world in complex and high value international commercial arbitration and investment treaty disputes including ICC, ICSID, SIAC, UNCITRAL and AMINZ proceedings.

Thomas has acted for local and off-shore companies, foreign states and governments, financial institutions, high net worth individuals, the Attorney-General, and domestic government departments and Crown entities.
Prior to joining Wynn Williams, Thomas worked at a specialist dispute resolution firm in Auckland and before that spent over 4 years in the London office of a top tier transatlantic boutique litigation and arbitration firm. He was previously an Assistant Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office and a Judges’ Clerk at the High Court in Auckland. He graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2012 with a First Class Honours degree in Law and a BA.
